What To Expect Before, During, And After Bariatric Surgery
As we here at Universal Medical Group are all well aware that bariatric surgery is one of the most important methods of weight loss and fitness. It’s the surgery that’s critical, but only half of losing weight. You’ll be taken care of at every stage — from prepping to post treatment — so you see the long-term effects and a better life.
Initial Consultation
You start losing weight with a free consultation either via video conference or face-to-face at our clinic. This is where you’ll tell one of our experts about your obesity history, health history, and weight loss intentions.
Our doctors will monitor your condition and make personalized recommendations for bariatric surgery or non-surgical treatments, based on your particular circumstances. : we will come together and discuss what the best way to get your weight off is for you: gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or some combination. When that is decided, we’ll operate when and where it suits you.

Our bariatric psychologist and nutritionist will also accompany you to meet you before surgery. These experts will prepare you mentally and physically for the procedure. There are also pre-surgical doctrinal instructions like a diet of very little calories and very little carbohydrates for 10 days before the surgery and recommended vitamin supplements to support your immune system.
We welcome any questions you might have during this period so you’re well prepared for the process and all of the changes that follow. Then you will also be given instructions not to eat or drink anything at least 12 hours before surgery.

Packing For Surgery Day
The day before your surgery day, you are packing for the hospital. We’ll be placing you in one of our private recovery rooms for at least a night and (if you’re coming from abroad) you can stay a couple of nights in our hotel nearby. Be sure to pack:
- Personal documents (ID, passport, insurance card)
- Entertainment (books, tablet)
- Phone charger and headphones
- Comfortable clothes and pajamas
- Warm socks, slippers, and flip flops
- Toiletries and skincare products
- Your favorite bedding supplies for extra comfort
Our clinic is located in a commercial area, so if you forget anything, you’ll have easy access to whatever you need.

Surgery Day
The day you enter Universal Medical Group, you will have surgery the same day. All local patients will have had all the pre-surgery tests performed and international patients will be picked up by our transportation company from San Diego International Airport and driven to our clinic.
You will also see our physician after you have been in clinic for final diagnosis such as tests and electrocardiogram. And dietary and post-operative support as well.
The anaesthesiologist will come and talk to you about the anaesthesia and pain-management before surgery. They’ll numb you, whisk you away to the operating room where our surgeons with board certification will reopen it through minimally invasive laparoscopy.

Recovery and Beyond
You’ll be closely watched by our doctors after surgery. You will be rested in our cosy private rooms and our employees will be there for you to help during your stay.
Your discharge instructions will cover everything from your new diet to how to handle post-operative discomfort to follow-up appointments, all before your discharge. We are here for you after you have left the clinic, and follow-up appointments and our online resources keep you on the path to sustainable success.
