We Provide a Postoperative Diet for Successful, Lasting Results

Postoperative diet: is one of the fundamental facets of any bariatric program. You lose the bulk of your stomach with bariatric surgery, and a well-organized postoperative diet will reacclimatize your body to its new life. Postoperative diet following is essential to losing weight and to building healthier eating habits for the long run.

Postoperative Diet Plans

As part of our integrative bariatric program, our specialists offer comprehensive nutrition planning for patients. At Universal Medical Group, you will receive specific, individualized plans for your pre- and post-operative diets, which will vary based on the type of procedure you receive. Our postoperative diet plans schedule a gradual introduction of foods, from liquids to solids, to allow your stomach ample time to heal properly, which reduces your risk of future complications. Allowing your stomach to heal also increases your odds of achieving your weight loss goals and keeping the weight off in the long term.

Postoperative diet plans are essential for all bariatric surgery patients. Individuals who undergo malabsorptive procedures must learn to choose foods and supplements that ensure they receive the nutrients they need. With our tailored plans, all patients can discover more options that will benefit their health and unique situations.

Postoperative Diet Plans

Liquids

In the first week to seven days of your bariatric surgery, you’ll eat only clear liquids such as water, chicken, beef or vegetable stock, popsicles and gelatin. Drink two to three ounces of water in a sitting and very slowly. You can drink non-clear liquids for one week after being granted this permission: skim milk, unsweetened plant-based milks, soups, sugar-free juices, and decaffeinated coffee or tea.

Pureed Foods

For the first week or so after your bariatric surgery, you will drink only clear liquids: water, chicken, beef or vegetable broth, popsicles, gelatin. Only two or three ounces at a time, and in very slow mode. Once approved, you can start having non-clear drinks for the next week — skim milk, raw plant milks, soups, sugar-free juices, and decaf coffee or tea.

Soft Foods

After three to four weeks of pureed foods, you may begin to introduce soft foods into your diet for about two weeks. Soft foods should be cut or shredded into very small pieces and may include diced fish or chicken, ground meats, canned or soft fruit without seeds or skin, and cooked vegetables without skin. Other good options are rice, lentils, tuna, and soft cheeses.

Healthy Solid Foods

You can start to incorporate more solid foods a little bit more in 6-8 weeks, but still break up your food in small, easy-to-digest portions. The hot or really crunched foods are not necessarily tolerable right away but you may be able to return to them in the future. Continue eating small meals and choosing your protein, vegetables, and fruits in good quality foods.
