And we hear about the physical effects of obesity so much, yet there is also an emotional and psychological price to be paid by obesity. In this post, I talk about the psychological effects of obesity and how to connect more closely with your body and brain.
The Weight of Stigma
Society just throws up too-high beauty ideals, and weight stigma and discrimination. This causes shame, guilt, low self-esteem and social exclusion in the obese.
Emotional Eating and Body Image
Obesity is not unrelated to emotional eating – when you overeat due to stress, anxiety, depression or boredom. Not only that, but poor body image results in shame and self-hatred, making it harder to nurture and treat yourself well.
Navigating Mental Health Challenges
It’s also more depressed, anxious and body dysmorphic in obese people, studies find. They’re illnesses you can’t get back unless you go to the doctor.
How to Have a Better Relationship with You:
- Leave Negative Thoughts Behind: Replace Negative Thoughts with Positive Words and accentuate positive qualities and accomplishments.
- Be Loved By Self: You are a self-loving friend the same way that you are a friend.
- Go for Health, not Weight: Rather than simply a weight-loss plan, adopt the healthy routines that feel good in your body and your mind.
- Help: Visit a therapist or peer support group for emotional eating, body image or mental health issues.
- Say Yay If You’re Only Doing A Little Thing: Be proud of every little positive step you are taking towards a healthier you.
You’re not your weight, after all. Don’t fight with your body and don’t forget to take care of your mind and emotions along with your body. Get help and treat yourself well are critical steps to a happier and healthier you.
